Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Minister of Youth and Sports has paid a familiarization tour of the National Sports College, Winneba (NSC-W) to acquaint himself with the activities of the institute.
The college has been neglected and is battling challenges in the areas of infrastructure and finances, hampering the target for which it was established more than two decades ago.
During the visit on Monday, the minister described the facility as strategic in the development of sports in the country, whilst pledging to work with management to turn around the fortunes of the college to deliver results.
He mentioned Public-Private Partnership (PPP) as an option to upgrade the infrastructure and make the college vibrant to respond to current trends in sports promotion and development and also make it more commercially viable.
Joe Kpenge, the Director of NSC-W observed that his outfit has chalked some heights in the wake of its challenges.
He said the college runs two academies, for Tennis and Football, adding that several tennis clinics held has resulted in some of their students representing Ghana at various international competitions.
For football, he noted that 19 players have been integrated into the Senior High School system to enhance their education whilst six were also selected by the technical handlers of the national U-17 team, Black Starlets.
The college established in 1984 has been engulfed in deterioration amongst other challenges hampering the realization of its objective of training and re-training the country’s technical and human resource in the Sports sector to fill the vacancies created by the exodus of trained and skilled officials to sustain the development and promotion of sports.
