Moneygram International has fulfilled its promise of providing the people Asuboi in the Offinso Municipality of the Ashanti Region with potable water. The company has handed over two boreholes to the people of the farming community.
The project, a response to the plight of the people who faced blindness as a result of the invasion of black flies, cost GHS25,000.
Most of the about 2,500 residents in the community were infected by worms that cause river blindness from drinking contaminated water.
Health officials could not attend to residents because of the poor road network which had cut off the community from the rest of the Offinso Municipality.
It was all excitement as the people accessed water at their doorsteps.
They expressed gratitude to Moneygram and the Multimedia Group for transforming their lives.
Nhyira FM’s investigative journalist, Ohemeng Tawiah who first broke the river blindness story witnessed the historic ceremony.
The people of Asuboi until the intervention shared two streams; Subin and Nkyereade with livestock.
A number of institutions have embarked on social intervention initiatives since the plight of the community came to light.
They include the reshaping of the road from the main Kumasi-Techiman road to the community, spraying of the river banks to get rid of black flies and on-going construction of a clinic. The Ministry of Health has also treated residents with Ivermectin to dose-off the filarial worm that causes the Onchocerciasis.
Moneygram Anglophone West Africa Marketing Manager, Gabriel Wilson was joined by the queen mother of Asuboi, Nana Yaa Asantewaa to cut the tape to officially commission the boreholes.
The assemblyman for the area led his people to express joy, singing a special song to show their appreciation to Moneygram and the Multimedia Group for their support.
Mr. Wilson told residents beginning next year; Moneygram will focus more on the provision of potable water and education infrastructure to deprived communities.
"Into the future, we will be looking to extending this project to other communities that have water problems, provide them water and also one other area we will be looking at is education," Mr. Wilson pointed out.
