The Ampain refugee camp in the Western Region is relocating to a new site, Agyeikrom, in the Central Region. This is to deal with the increasing number of refugees at the camp. The camp has been experiencing food and water shortages due to the large numbers of refugees. Manager of the Ampain camp, Kelly Forson, has confirmed that 1,400 more refugees at the Elubu border were expected to be brought to the camp. Mr Forson however said the refugees would first be moved to a temporary structure. The Ampain Camp was created early on this year to provide shelter for Ivorian refugees who fled the post-election violence in the Ivory Coast. A disagreement between deposed President Laurent Gbagbo, then the incumbent, and President Alassane Ouattara torched off a four-month stand-off which claimed thousands of lives. Although some of the refugees have returned to Cote d’Ivoire, several hundreds have decided to take up residence in Ghana, at least to wait for the tension back home to die down some more. New President Alassane Ouattara was sworn into office the second time on Saturday at a ceremony attended by personalities including President John Atta Mills and the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon.
