At least 242 people perished and 1,138 injured in 593 motor accident cases recorded in Brong Ahafo last year.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Paul Wesley Baah, Regional Motor, Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that the accidents, which involved 796 vehicles, showed an increase in cases as compared to 454 cases recorded in the year 2009.
He said all the accidents were caused by human error comprising over speeding, fatigue and lack of maintenance of vehicles.
The MTTU Commander said in the first quarter of the year under review, 200 of the accident cases were recorded, 149 in the second quarter, 125 and 139 in the third and forth quarters respectively.
Mr Baah appealed to vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles were well maintained and not to demand too much from their drivers that made them to overwork themselves.
The regional MTTU commander appealed to drivers to observe road signs and markings that guided them and to try as much as possible to reduce speed at settlement areas.
