MP wants toilet roll thief punished

Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah is pushing for punitive sanctions against a man who is alleged to have stolen 24 pieces of toilet rolls from Parliament.

The 49-year-old man was arrested by police officers at Parliament on Friday.

Reports suggest the man sneaked into the Job 600 building – which houses offices for lawmakers – through a lift, entered and searched each washroom for unused toilet rolls.

Security at the premises raised alarm after he tried to make away with his loot, resulting in his arrest.

Police have identified that the yet-to-be-named man is not a worker at Parliament and had not been logged in as a visitor at the Job 600 building.

How he got access into the building, is, however, an issue the police are investigating. The suspect is in custody at the Ministries Police Station.

The man has apologised, but the MP wants the suspect punished.

Parliament troll thief

Mr Amankwah said it doesn’t matter that he stole tissue paper. The law should be allowed to take its course.

“When I heard he said sorry, I thought it was a joke but having gone through it I realise that it was pure thievery which is against the laws of this land.

“Section 125 of the criminal offences act is clear on that…we should allow the law to take its own course,” Vice Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee said.

He said calls for Parliament to tamper justice with mercy because of the trivial nature of what he stole, are misplaced.

“Once he has gone against the law, we should allow the law to take its due course. We should all follow the law every step of the way,” he said.
