To mark the 10th edition of its 21 days of Y’ello Care staff volunteer programme, telecommunication giant; MTN Ghana has reconstructed the Street Academy School at Mensah Guinea Beach in Accra.

The school’s wooden structure was pulled down and replaced with a concrete building to provide a conducive teaching and learning environment for pupils of the Street Academy School.

The facility is now completed with a study area, a kitchen, a dining room, storage area and an ICT learning area with internet access.

Street Academy has also been expanded to create the opportunity for more street children within the Art Center and James Town enclave to be enrolled at the Academy.

The 21 Days of Y’ello Care is an annual staff volunteer programme that runs across the MTN Group from June 1-21. It was instituted 10 years ago and has grown to become one of the key activities on the MTN calendar.

In line with the theme: ‘Investing in Education for All’, MTN volunteers undertake various activities across the country to promote and encourage the use of technology during the 21 days of Y’ello Care.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, said the project aims at brightening the lives of our stakeholders in the country.

She indicated that, in the 10^th edition of the 21 Days of Y’ello Care, staff volunteers impacted over 6,000 pupils in about 30 schools across the country.

“We are grateful to all our staff volunteers who defied the rains to make the 21 Days of Y’ello Care a success. You have exhibited a CAN DO spirit, our vital behaviours of collaboration and Get it Done” she added.

Cynthia Lumor hoped the investment made will go a long way to enhance teaching and learning in the beneficiary institutions.

 “By supporting this project, MTN is helping the children to stay away from the streets and to give them the skills they need to turn their potential into success”

Mrs. Lumor thanked the Y’ello Care partners particularly Ghana Education Service for the immense contribution in ensuring that they achieved their objective within 21 days.

Board Chairman of Street Academy, Lydia Sackey expressed their profound gratitude to MTN for the timely intervention.

She said the expansion of the facility will afford the opportunity to other street children who hitherto could not be accommodated due to space, to enroll and be educated.

“We are grateful to MTN for putting smiles on the faces of the children at Street Academy,” she said.

She assured MTN the facility to be put to good use and maintained very well.
