A Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and spokesperson for ex-president Rawlings, Mr. Kofi Adams has dismissed speculations that former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings intends to contest the December 2012 presidential election as an independent candidate.
Fresh posters of Nana Konadu are reportedly splashed across Tamale in the Northern Region and some parts of the Ashanti and Eastern Regions, supposedly announcing her intention to contest as a presidential candidate this year.
But, speaking on Multi TV’s current affairs programme Badwam on Tuesday, Kofi Adams denied claims that the former first lady is planning to go independent, stating that “she will still be with the party and fight for the flagbearership slot in the next (2016) presidential primary”.
He stressed that Nana Konadu Agyemang has not sanctioned anybody to undertake “such an ill-intended action to denigrate the former first lady. I have checked from all the sources and can say it is not coming from the quarters of nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings. People just want to take undue advantage over nothing”.
Rather, Kofi Adams said, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings will surely lead the party after the exit of president Mills in 2016.
According to him, the constitution allows president Mills to lead the party twice as a president and claims Nana Konadu is next to succeed him as leader of the party to victory in 2016.
“You know the constitution of Ghana allows President Mills to be president for two terms of eight (8) years. And I am stating emphatically that Nana Konadu is the only competent person left in the party to lead it to victory in the 2016 general elections” he said.
He is certain that Vice President John Mahama will go with President Mills after his eight year rule and will not run for the flagearership position in the subsequent election.
“I know John Mahama will not run for the leadership position of the party. He will serve two terms in office as Veep and exit with President Mills because Konadu is more competent enough to lead the party”.
When asked whether the vice president is not a presidential material, Kofi Adams said “ask yourself why the NPP failed to elect Vice President Aliu Mahama as its flagbearer after Kufuor exited. Was he a presidential material or not? Konadu will certainly beat Mahama if he dares (to) contest the primary in 2016”.
“I know by the next flabearership contest of the party, delegates would have understood Nana Konadu better, seen her vision and will massively endorse her candidature to lead the party to the 2016 general elections” Kofi posited.
