Kyrie Irving’s future with the Brooklyn Nets is now in doubt with his stance against getting vaccinated.
According to reports, Irving is not eligible to play home games in Brooklyn due to New York City vaccine mandates.
The Brooklyn Nets organization announced last week that they would not allow Irving to play or practice at all until he can become a full-time member of the team.
Later during the same week reports came out saying the Nets no longer have intentions of offering the all-star a four-year, $186 million extension.
ESPN’s Zach Lowe said on his podcast that even if Irving got vaccinated and returned to the team in a full-time role, the Brooklyn Nets still may not offer the extension.
The organization also plans on not paying Irving for home games missed. 41 games which comes at a total of $16 million.
Brooklyn’s season opener will be against defending Champions Milwaukee Bucks, the very team that knocked them out of the playoffs after 7 games in the second round of the tournament.
Kyrie Irving went on Instagram Live to get his voice heard on the recent speculations surrounding him and he said, “nobody should be forced to do anything with their bodies.”
He added it was not about money and he feels people need to get their voices heard as he believes unemployment has been on the rise for persons who state their stance against vaccination.
"This is my life," Irving said. "I get to do whatever I want with it; this is one body that I get here. And you are telling me what to do with my body."
Kyrie Irving is known for putting his personal issues ahead his team and rightly so, it is fair. But when it gets to a point where it disrupts the flow of the team and affects the team negatively a decision needs to be made.
Nets general manager, Sean Marks, said he had no choice but to keep Irving away from the team until his vaccination issue is resolved and it will not be fair to allow him or the team to have around a part-time player as they need a clear mind to focus on their season.
The NBA is looking to have a 100% vaccination status for all staff and players and with more than 95% of this goal being achieved it shows the level of seriousness shown by organizations and players to keep every one safe and protected from the virus.
Lives are more valuable than jobs that the All-Star seems to be concerned about.
Without the personnel being able to stay alive where will the working capital come from?
This virus is one that easily spreads and therefore protecting yourself means you are indirectly protecting people around you, therefore reducing the spread.
Irving needs to understand that vaccination is just not for your safety but the safety of your community. If you care about the people at your workplace you will protect yourself.
