The Dagbon Traditional Council has vowed to use all legitimate means to stop the processes that could lead to the removal of Chereponi from the Northern region.
Chief of the area, Jaminja Malba Yombu, tried to stop the process but that was overturned by the district security council.
Speaking to Joy News, registrar of the Council, Adam Gariba said government is acting in bad faith.
According to him, the chiefs who are peace-loving have sat down to dialogue and resolved that they do not want any part of their area to be ceded and that must be respected.
“They have told the presidency, the committee of enquiry, Regional Reorganisation minister but yet still the maps which are on social media though not official shows otherwise,” he said.
The Justice Brobbey Commission of Enquiry recommended the creation of six new regions from the present Brong Ahafo, Western, Northern and the Volta regions after studying and investigating several petitions submitted.
The EC in accordance with the Constitution started a limited registration of voters on Sunday ahead of a referendum to decide on the recommendation, but Chereponi cited in the yet to be created North East from the Northern region got off on bad a start.
In the latest move, the umbrella traditional council of Dagbon is pointing fingers at government for ignoring their position on ceding Chereponi to the new region.
In a petition to president Akufo-Addo, leader of the council described the development as unfortunate.
They made it clear in that Chereponi is an integral and inseparable part of Dagbon and they will not allow for it to be added to any proposed new region.
They recalled the unanimous resolution between them and government not to cede any part of Dagbon area for the convenience of creating new regions. This position, they reiterated has not changed.
“We pray that government will listen to our legitimate request and will not be seeking to meet the demands of a minority against the right of majority Dagbon.
“The Dagbon Traditional Council and the good people of Dagbon will continue to use civil and legitimate means to resist any attempt to cede Chereponi to any other region.”
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive of Chereponi, Tahidu Abdulai said adequate security has been provided for Electoral Commission officer who will undertake the exercise.
