NHIS management dismisses fraud claims

The Management of the National Health Insurance Authority has dismissed claims that its new billing system is pregnant with corruption. According to the Public Relations Officer of the Authority, Akwasi Acquah, the high cost incurred in running the scheme is as a result of increased patronage. Mr. David Samari, Scheme Manager at the Kassena Nankana Mutual Health Insurance called for a review of the billing system, describing it as “fraud prone.” He argued that service providers have taken advantage of the loopholes in the system and are milking the state of several millions of Ghana cedis. Mr. Samari advocated for a return to the old billing system- “itemized fee for service,” which he said spelt out in detail the services rendered and the cost incurred. This he said reduces the levels of corruption in the system. But Mr. Acquah in an interview with Citi News on Monday said the authority has judiciously monitored the implementation of the new billing system and are convinced it is not fraught with corruption. He blamed the high cost of running the scheme on the increase in patronage and not because of corruption. “High number of people have become aware of the importance of the scheme and have registered for it,” he said.
