The National identification Authority says it cannot be blamed for alleged irregularities in the issuance of the national identification cards in the Greater Accra Region, as suggested in some current media reports.
A statement issued and signed by the Public Affairs Director, Bertha Dzeble said problems such as names of applicants not found on the distribution list at the centres where they registered, wrong personal information including changing of surnames and wrong spelling of names among others came from the applicants.
According to the NIA, bad fingerprints, poor portraits and poor signatures caused the rejection of cards of some applicants by the Automated Fingerprint Identification System.
The statement also indicated that wrong personal information or misspellings of names are as a result of applicants’ failure to correct their personal information on their existing ID cards.
The NIA said the public’s complain of having to wait in queues for days only to be told their names are not on the list were caused by some aggrieved individuals who destroyed the lists at the centres simply because some applicants could not find their names and decided to deny others the chance to check their names.
On the issue of extortion of money, the NIA condemned the act and emphasized that both registration and card collection are free services financed by the government of Ghana.
