The Electoral Commission will next month hold District level elections to permit Ghanaians choose new assembly members and unit committee representatives.
The exercise has seen low patronage over the years with some questioning the relevance of assembly members.
For residents in Nima here in Accra, the biggest problem facing the community is poor sanitation.
The claim by the residents is that assembly members have, over the years ,failed to help them deal with the problem hence their decision to not partake in the exercise.
Joseph Opoku Gakpo was in the community and reports the community has over 80,000 residents with a popular market which serves a good number of other communities.
Five candidates are jostling for the Assemblyman position.
Umaro Sanda, the incumbent, who is seeking re-election took Joseph Opoku Gakpo round the community; pointing out the number of development projects he has executed, one of which is a public toilet.
However the residents appear to be unimpressed with the work done by the Assemblyman.
Even though faced with a number of challenges, the residents claim poor sanitation is their biggest headache in the neighbourhood.
Umaro Sanda said the problem is more attitudinal than the lack of facilities.
The residents have meanwhile threatened to boycott the elections because they claim they have no relevance to the district level election.
In a related development, Local Government Minister Julius Debrah has been touring some districts in Tamale to speak about the upcoming district level elections.
Listen to the attached report by Joy news’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo, who visited the community.
