Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the New Patriotic Party stands out in the nation's history to have invested extensively in the development of the northern parts of the country.
Speaking at a Townhall Meeting on Tuesday, Dr Bawumia said many infrastructural projects are being carried out across all sectors including, agriculture, health, and roads.
He noted that the projects of which some are still under construction will improve the livelihoods of its residents and make life easier for them.
Touching on the agriculture sector, he indicated that irrigation dams have been constructed in various parts of the country, particularly in the northern regions.
“We know that the dams we have constructed for irrigation do not reach that of Akosombo dam. But we all know that everybody has a traditional way of storing water to irrigate plants during the dry season.
“And what the Akufo-Addo government has done is the practical response to what the people in northern Ghana need.”
Dr Bawumia added, “We have awarded 560 constructs of these small earth dams and to date 435 have been constructed.”
Jibing the opposition National Democratic Congress for insisting that the dams cannot be used for irrigation, he said, “I wonder what they mean because each small dam contains 30,000 cubic meters of water when full and this is enough to survive a greater part of the average dry season in any year.”
The Vice President highlighted that the poor road network in the five northern regions had impeded the economical growth of its citizens.
Hence, to solve that challenge, government had completed the construction of a major road in the Upper West region and is working on one in the Upper East region as well.
“Upper West has already gotten the Lara-Hamile road and we will soon complete the Bolga-Bawku road in Upper East. And what we would have done will be more than what the NDC did in eight years in the northern regions,” he said.
