Last October, President Akufo-Addo gave directive for the country to change its gas distribution. Since then, the National Petroleum Authority's (NPA) Chief Executive, Alhassan Tampuli, has ordered for the implementation of a new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder recirculation model.
At various events in the Nima, Mamobi and Kotobabi areas Thursday, Tampuli advised community residents that the new measure will save lives.
“If a gas explosion is happening, it doesn’t care the gender or wealth status,” Tampuli noted. “We can’t do the same thing and expect different results. We need to change the model and get different results.”
The new model will involve moving LPG bottling plants from congested areas and into more isolated parts of the country. Population centres will fill empty cylinders before they are distributed at retail outlets.
In June, the NPA presented the new LPG Cylinder Recirculation model at the Council Chambers in Accra. Tampuli briefed Council of State members on the new model, which he said would improve safety, health and the environment.
He assured the Council that the Ghanaian people would remain his first priority when the policy rolls out.
Chairman of the Council, Nana Otuo Siriboe II, advised the NPA to incorporate the views of all groups and individuals that will be affected by the new policy.
“At the end of the day, the policy should inure to the benefit of the Ghanaian people,” Siriboe said in June.
Since the policy was announced, the NPA has carried out extensive measures to ensure a smooth rollout of the process.
