Nana Akufo-Addo, presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party has urged all aspiring parliamentary candidates to abide by the Party's constitution and rules and regulations laid down for that process.
“Guided by the broader interest of our party, let the contests be respectful and decorous. Disagreement on who is the best candidate for a particular constituency need not undermine our common interest,” he said in a press statement to the party over the weekend.
According to Nana Addo, consistent with the democratic tradition of the NPP, all members of the party should respect the choice of the people and unite behind whoever is chosen.
“Our goal in this exercise is to nominate candidates who will win in December and help us increase our parliamentary majority. We should all be mindful of the fact that victory of anyone of us would be worthless unless it leads to our collective victory in December," he added.
Nana Akufo-Addo noted that the primary process like all contests in the party should lead to a stronger and even more united party.
“United, there is no political force in Ghana that can withstand the might of the elephant party, the broad masses of the Ghanaian people look to us to maintain the progress and gains of the Kufuor era”, he stressed.
The NPP opened nominations for constituencies with sitting MPs on Saturday March 1, 2008. A number of aspiring candidates, including Municipal and District Chief Executives have started picking up nomination forms and there are indications of a very keen competition. Candidates for constituencies where the party has no sitting MP (normally referred to as orphan constituencies) were chosen last year.
