The National Youth Authority (NYA) says it plans to establish a fund to facilitate youth development in the country.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of NYA, Peter Boamah Otokunor, says the proposed project can however, come to fruition after the passage of the Youth Bill.
"The Youth bill is a very critical bill that we need as an authority," Otokunor stated on ‘My Banner’ on the ‘AM Show’ on JoyNews on MultiTV.
"The Youth bill will govern how statutory funds are allocated to the authority,” he told Mamavi Owusu Aboagye, host of the AM Show.
“We hope to establish a Youth Fund that will function like GETfund so that we can have direct funds coming to us so we can effectively implement the youth development programmes that we have.”
In a related development, Minister for Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah at the Meet-the-Press series on Tuesday disclosed the National Youth Bill has been re-submitted to Parliament and it is expected to be passed into law by the close of the year.
Afriyie Ankrah said the Bill, when passed into law, will give the necessary legal backing to the ministry’s youth development agenda.
Meanwhile, the NYA later this year will have a job and entrepreneurship lecture series, where the youth will be trained on how to write proposals to seek funding for their projects.
The NYA will also have a Youth Entrepreneurship competition, where young people will be asked to bring out business proposals. The best three will be given about GHC100,000 so they can start their own business.
According to Otokunor, this is one way to curb the rising rate of youth unemployment.
