Richard Oblitei Commey pummeled his opponent Bilal Mohammed into submission to become the new African International Boxing Federation Lightweight Champion. The bout came to an end in the seventh round after Commey landed a powerful right hand to the head of his opponent knocking him out at the City Engineers premises in Accra. The new champion came into this bout on a phenomenal record of 14 wins from all fourteen professional bouts while his opponent Mohammed had a record of 25-20-0-3.With teeming fans from his base in Accra Central, the champion had everything going for him from the start as he dominated his opponent with strong body shots whiles looking to gain a firm hold of the bout.Mohammed did his best to do some counter punching but that lacked accuracy and when they did land, they lacked power to harm the champion.Clearly on top of his game, it was only a matter of time before Mohammed succumbed at some point. There was controversy in the fourth round of the scheduled 12-rounder when fans of Commey who had been on a singing and jama spree long before the bout, accosted the corner men of Mohammed, accusing them of using some concoction on Mohammed to boost his performance.Referee Roger Bannor had to instruct them to get the content away before the bout proceeded. With Commey clearly winning every single round, there was a temporary hold up again when the ropes of the ring gave in, in Round Seven. It had to take the expertise of some gentlemen around to fix the ring again for a championship bout of this magnitude. When all thought that Mohammed had been the beneficiary of this long break, he was to be caught with a powerful right hook that got him sprawling on the floor of the ring when hostilities bagan. He managed to beat the count but could not stay on his legs leaving Referee Barnor with no option than to stop the bout.An elated Commey could not hide his excitement as he promised to work harder to become the next world Champion for Ghana.“I am happy with my performance. I have sparred with Mohammed a few times and I knew what his strengths and weaknesses were going into the bout. I had a clear game plan and stuck to that. I salute the efforts of my team who have made it possible for me to come this far and I believe I have what it takes to become a World Champion.”The Champion now improves his record to 15-15-0-0.On the undercard, Olympian Duke Micah defeated Ekow Wilson as he steadily builds himself for a long professional career.
