Deputy Information Minister, Okudzeto Ablakwah has launched a stinging attack on members of the opposition New Patriotic Party who are crying foul over recent prosecution of its members.
Minority leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and the chairman of the opposition party Jake Obetsebi Lamptey on Wednesday organised a joint press conference accusing government of needlessly hauling its functionaries to court.
Far from seeking accountability, the Minority Leader claims the prosecutions were nothing but trumped-up charges geared towards tarnishing the image of the ex-government officials.
He cited an instance where the ex-deputy finance minister Professor Gyan Baffuor was falsely accused by the Director of Public Prosecutions of running away from the course of justice and threatened to seek a bench warrant for his arrest when indeed no formal charge had been proferred against him.
The Minority Leader again accused the Attorney General, Mrs Betty Mould of hastily hauling the former appointees to court when she had stated there was no palpable evidence of wrong doing against them.
But the Deputy Minister believes the utterances by the NPP officials are ridiculous, to say the least.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in an interview with Citi FM minced no words in his condemnation of the press conference.
According to him, “politicians must grow up” and be accountable for their tenure in office.
He said the practice where politicians shamefully try cases in the court of public opinion, instead of the law court will not be countenanced.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa noted the judiciary is independent and capable enough to decipher whether the charges levelled against the ex-government officials had legal merit or not.
He said governance is not a “stroll in the park” where people enjoy largese of the state without accounting for their stewardship.
He described as an insult to the Chief Justice, assertions that the judiciary would be manipulated, insisting the government since coming into power has not interfered with the judiciary.
“Ghanaians must be getting irritated by the conduct of politicians” he noted and cautioned those politicians to stop the "shenanigans."
