Implementing the paperless system at the ports would not result in any job losses, the managers of electronic services at the ports, GCNet said.
The pilot implementation of the new system is expected to kick start this month at the Tema Port.
Some of the companies operating at the ports said the automated regime would only cost them their jobs.
But the Product Development Manager at GCNet, Carl Sackey, said this will not be the case.
He said, “This system is not meant to cause job losses, people will still be manning the various automation equipment.”
Economist Dr. Eric Assibey is prevailing on government not to terminate the contract of the two IT solution providers for the National Single Window system.
In an exclusive interview with JoyBusiness, Dr. Assibey said, “The best way to solve the issues among them is to clearly define the roles for each one, we cannot have two companies doing same thing”
GCNet and West Blue have allegedly been engaged in a turf war due to apparent duplication of roles in the system supposed to enhance the speed and cost of doing business at the ports.
This has made some players even rather refer to the system as a “Double Window” due to its negative impact on port activities.
But Dr. Osei Assibey said the way forward is for both entities to be given clearly defined roles in the implementation of the Single Window System.
“It is not prudent to abrogate any of the contracts of these two because it will send a bad signal to international investors,” he said.
