The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored calm in Ntotroso in the Ahafo region, after an attempted security breach at the Newmont mining site on the night of Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
According to the Police in a statement, a group of individuals allegedly attempted to steal gold from the site, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
The Police stated that in the ensuing confrontation, three persons lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries.
The statement said that the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, worked closely with the Regional Police team via phone, engaging community leaders and youth throughout the night and into the morning to ensure that the situation stabilised, with no reprisal attacks or escalation of tensions in the community.
To further address the incident, the Police noted that a special investigation team from Accra has been deployed to Ntotroso to conduct a thorough inquiry. Additionally, a reinforcement team has been sent to the area to maintain peace, security, and law and order.
The Police have confirmed that the three deceased individuals are Muslims, and in adherence to due process, their bodies are being prepared for release to their families for burial later today.
They urged the public to remain calm as they continue working to ensure that peace prevails.
