President John Evans Atta Mills has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives appointed under the Kufuor administration to stay in office until further notice.
The directive follows reports that some DCE’s have either vacated their positions or are not functioning on account of the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the just ended general elections.
According to Mahama Ayariga, Presidential Spokesperson, the move by the DCE’s is unwarranted.
He told Joy News on Thursday, Municipal and District Chief Executives could only vacate their positions by virtue of a resignation, death, a vote of no confidence or an outright dismissal by the president.
“Until any of those happens the Metropolitan and District Chief Executive remain at post.” Ayariga maintained.
He dismissed the perception that the position of the DCE is purely political which called for an unquestionable loyalty from the appointees.
“For us we believe everybody will be loyal to the welfare of Ghana,” adding, “I do not believe for the period in which they will stay in office, they will engage in conducts that will undermine the constitution or the law that established their offices.”
Even though he has no idea when new appointments will be made, Hon. Ayariga insisted the current appointees must remain at post.
Meanwhile Joy News has learnt that the Central Regional Coordinating Director, Mr. Essandoh, on Wednesday directed all District coordinating councils to take over from all DCE’s but has since rescinded his decision, perhaps on account of the new presidential directive.
