Prominent citizens to be honoured

The Chiefs and people of Anomabo, a historic town in the Central Region are feverishly preparing for a durbar to be held on Saturday, February 24 to honour some prominent citizens of the town. President John Agyekum Kufuor is expected to unveil the busts of George Ekem Ferguson, who surveyed the landmarks of the then Gold Coast and an abolitionist of the slave trade, Dr. James Kwegyir Aggrey, an educationist and advocate of girl-child education and Nana Amonoo VI,who was a signatory to the Bond of 1844. A visit to the place showed that the forecourt of Fort Williams, venue for the durbar, was being put in shape while the principal streets were being rehabilitated and decorated with the national colours. Kwesi Nana Sagoe, an Opinion Leader and Member of the Planning Committee said that Dr Robert Gardner, onetime Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa and a Commissioner in the government of the late General I K Acheampong will also be honoured. He said the Reverend Gaddiel Acquaah; First African Chairman of the Conference of the Methodist Church and Mrs. Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie, a Member of the Council of State will also be honoured at the durbar, which forms part of the activities marking the Golden Jubilee of the nation's independence. "A community, which does not honour its heroes and heroines is not worthy dying for hence the decision to immortalise people who made significant contributions to the development of the town and the nation as a whole," he stated.
