The Electoral Commission (EC) is embarking on a limited voter registration exercise ahead of the December referendum for the creation of the proposed six new regions.
The registration exercise which is expected to take place within 47 districts offices of the EC for the affected areas will be done online through the commission’s Voter Management System.
The EC is mandated by law to hold the referendum to determine whether the voters in the regions to be created support the creation of the new region or not, the EC Chair Jean Mensa said.
The registration will, therefore, will take place from Sunday, September 16, to Tuesday 25.
Addressing the press on Friday, Mrs Mensa said the Commission has secured the necessary funding to undertake the exercise.
Suits by Strategic Thinkers Network-Africa and three other citizens have been ignored by the Commission.
Mrs Mensa said the suits did not constitute injunctions.
“With regard to the suit, it was delivered yesterday but was not with an application and therefore it cannot be held to be binding an effective injunction on the Commission. That is why we are going ahead with the limited registration exercise as planned,” she said.
Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress is raising concerns about the mode of registration.
National Organiser, Kofi Adams said they are not in favour of the arrangement being used by EC.
“If the arrangement we are hearing is what they are going to do on the ground, it means that it is going to create a problem.
“And this is the reasons why if they had allowed for proper engagement, we would have resolved all these,” he added.
