Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams has urged the public to refrain from politicising issues on the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) initiative.
He said the only way the fund would succeed and give the needed results was for "us to be bi-partisan in discussing issues concerning it.”
Speaking on Peace FM's Morning Show ‘Kokrokoo’, Mr. Adams noted that instead of downplaying the entrepreneurial ability of the youth, everyone must come onboard and make suggestions to support the implementation of the fund.
President John Mahama, during an event to mark the 2014 Youth Day Tuesday, disclosed that GH₵10 million had been set up to help Ghana’s teeming young start up entrepreneurs.
The President said there would be no political bias in the disbursement of the fund, adding that the distribution would be done on ‘merit’.
The fund is expected to assist young but brilliant entrepreneurs to turn their job creation ideas into reality by becoming job creators rather than job seekers.
Many people have condemned the launch of the fund with others saying it was another avenue for the government to mismanage state funds.
The National Youth Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku said the fund was “another avenue for people to loot state funds.”
Also, NPP Member of Parliament for Berekum, Dr. Twum Nuamah, mentioned that the amount of money announced by the President was “woefully inadequate”, questioning, why the fund had delayed.
To this end, he said the government was not showing seriousness to issues bothering on the youth in the country.
Kofi Adams, however, disagreed with assertions that the GH₵10 million set aside for the programme was inadequate.
According to him, it was a very good beginning and that, further amendments would be made as the programme progresses.
He admitted that even though previous initiatives like the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Agency (GYEEDA), which was introduced to support the youth seemed to have failed, there was no need for them to be canceled.
He noted they should rather be reviewed and accessed while finding out reasons, which have led to their supposed failure and get them properly restructured.
The General Secretary affirmed that the 2014 Youth Day was the best the country had ever witnessed and urged that all persons should come together to ensure the success of the initiative than wishing for its failure.
