A confidante of the Rawlingses Herbert Mensah has been released on bail by the Bureau of National Investigations.
The ex-Kotoko Chief Executive Officer was released after nearly nine hours of interrogation by the Bureau.
He claimed to have in his possession a security tape in which an amount of 90million Ghana cedis has been earmarked for President John Mills’ campaign for re-election in the party’s primary in July.
The president, John Mills scoffed at the allegation but directed an investigation into it by the national security.
On Monday Herbert Mensah was pick up around 9:00 am by the officers of the Bureau and led into the outfit of the BNI where he was held until about 6:00 when he was released on bail.
Before his release, supporters of the Nana Konadu campaign bid threatened to head to the offices of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to protest the holding of Mr Herbert Mensah.
Dela Cofie, spokesperson of the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings (FONKAR) told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoe they are appalled at the treatment being meted out to Mr Mensah and are obliged to show solidarity.
According to him the action by the BNI is part of a grand plot of intimidation by government officials to cow supporters of Nana Konadu into submission.
He alleged regional members of FONKAR are also facing similar intimidation and invitations by the BNI.
He confirmed that persons indignant to what he claims to be the mistreatment of Mr. Mensah were converging at a point, before trekking to the offices of the BNI to demand his release.
But a deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah told Joy News the BNI will not overstep its bounds in investigating the issue.
He said Mr. Mensah was interrogated in the presence and full glare of his lawyer.
He argued the allegation being investigated is serious for which reason the truth ought to be unravelled, and quickly.
Mr. Ablakwah could not confirm the veracity of the allegation that members of FONKAR have in a similar fashion been invited by officials of the Bureau but dismissed allegations of intimidation against Herbert Mensah.
He hinted, subtly, Mr. Mensah was unable to provide the evidence saying “it doesn’t appear he has the tapes.”
He predicted the business man may well be released before close of day, Monday.
Joy News can confirm that Mr Mensah was later released with the indication that he would later be invited when necessary.
