Some religious bodies in the country have kicked against the directive by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for Junior High Schools to increase class hours for final year students by including Saturdays.
Speaking with Adom News, the General Manager for the Seventh Day Adventist Education Unit, Mr. P.Y. Frempah says the SDA will do everything possible to resist the GES’s suggestion.
Mr. Frempah insists the directive is against their religious rights which are enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. Members of the church worship on Saturdays and thereby believe that their children will have their religious rights infringed upon, if they are compelled to go to school on the said day.
Mr. Frempah also explains that the extension of class hours alone will not solve the problem of poor performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination results, as the system requires commitment from both students and teachers.
A retired lecturer at the University of Ghana, Sheik Shuaib Abubakar also said Muslims in the country will make sure that the directive does not see the light of day.
He said they will not have any problems with the directive, if the GES can provide an Islamic scholar who will teach Muslim students Arabic and Islamic on Saturdays as it is only on such days that they get to go to the Mosques to learn those two subjects.
However, Deputy Director of Ghana Education Service (GES), Stephen Adu, said schools can decide whether they should hold their class on Saturday or Sunday, depending on their locality.
Speaking to Adom News, Mr Adu stated that schools which will be affected with the extra day classes, can choose either
Saturday, Sunday or other suitable alternatives.
He stated that the move is just a short term measure while a permanent solution is being worked out to fix the problem of poor results.
