Road safety campaigners in the Ashanti region say the roads were relatively safe in the 2010 Christmas festive season.
Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Kwaku Oware-Boateng says road accidents in the region were minimal, though two fatalities were recorded.
Mr. Boateng expects drivers to continue responding appropriately to the foggy weather whilst adhering to road regulations to instill safety.
He says an improved driver’ attitude towards road safety would ensure a remarkable reduction in road accidents in 2011.
Meanwhile, motorists and pedestrians in Kumasi have hailed Luv Fm’s Road Safety Campaign.
The station kick-started the campaign in December 2010 with a float through the principal streets of the Garden City and the hanging of a crashed car at major rounds-about and intersections in the metropolis.
The suspension of the wrecked car served as a caution to drivers.
Commuters have described the hanging of the crashed car at high vantage traffic points in the metropolis as classic and timely – some drivers say they took a cue from the mangled accident car to reduce speed and drive safe.
Some respondents called for greater collaboration with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) as well as the Driver and Vehicular Licencing Authority (DVLA) to rid the roads of rickety vehicles.
The Luv FM Road Safety Campaign was sponsored by Guinness Ghana Breweries, Shell Ghana Limited, Regency Alliance Insurance, Impulse Energy Drink, Toyota Ghana, Latex Foam, Elite Kingdom Investments and VIP Transport.
The exercise was also supported by the National Road Safety Commission.
