Rodrygo Goes has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, ruling him out for the remainder of the season and the 2026 World Cup. Medical tests following the discomfort he suffered against Getafe confirmed the most feared diagnosis.
It is a crushing setback for the player, Real Madrid, and the Brazil national team. With the World Cup just months away, one of Brazil’s most dynamic attacking threats will not be part of the global showcase.
The injury occurred shortly after Rodrygo stepped onto the pitch. In a move down the flank, his right knee became trapped during an awkward challenge. Despite visible pain, he managed to continue and finish the match.
But the warning signs were clear. He was examined in the locker room before undergoing further tests the following morning, where the severity of the injury was confirmed.
Rodrygo had only just returned from nearly a month out with tendinitis. Introduced in the 54th minute against Getafe, he tried to make an impact but was seen holding his right knee at full time — an ominous sign of what was to come.
With Rodrygo sidelined, Real Madrid’s attacking options are severely limited. For the upcoming clash in Vigo, the squad will rely primarily on VinÃcius Jr. and Gonzalo as available forwards. Kylian Mbappé remains injured, while Franco Mastantuono is suspended following a recent red card.
Beyond the immediate fixture congestion, the absence of Rodrygo disrupts the club’s competitive ambitions and leaves Brazil without a key figure ahead of the World Cup.
