The Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has apologized to the camp of flagbearer aspirant Alan Kyerematen after accusations of bias.
Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey is accused of openly favouring Nana Akufo-Addo, one of the contenders for the party’s flagbearership slot.
Speaking at a press soiree in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, Kwabena Agyapong, a member of Alan’s campaign team accused the entire executive of acts that clearly demonstrate that they are in favour of one candidate.
Mr Agyapong said Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey personally presented money at a funeral in Wa on behalf of Nana Addo.
“I got a report from Wa that Jake went and made a donation on behalf of Nana Addo at a funeral. Not a party donation, explaining that Nana Addo could not come and he (Jake) was donating money at the funeral…So it’s very clear that the National Executives want to force the party in a certain direction. So we have to stand up; it may be a few of us against the rest, I can tell you we will give them a run for their money,” he said.
But in a response to the accusations Monday morning on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey said he has learnt his lessons and would not repeat the incident again.
According to him, the presentation was a one-off act of love he showed the bereaved family of one Chief Gambo in Wa from himself and on behalf of Nana Addo and the party.
Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey added that he made three donations at the funeral which was a private rather than a public event, adding, the criticisms are unreasonable and show the extreme sensitivity in the affairs of the party ahead of congress.
“I hope it is not a wrong move. It is not the first time I have done this. I have made similar donations when I was the regional chairman of the party,” Jake said.
The party chairman, who played a lead role - campaign chairman - during Nana Addo’s last attempt at the Presidency in 2008, said the incident would not happen again as the party lays down the ground rules to guide itself in the preparations towards congress in August.
However, Mr Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, spokesperson for Alan, said whilst Jake’s explanation has been understood, it is important that the national office of the party goes beyond a mere explanation and apology to assure the various parties in the contest that the incident will not recur.
Akufo-Addo reacts
In a sharp rebuttal, the Nana-Addo campaign is accusing the Alan Kyerematen camp of doing worse to compromise the neutrality of the NPP executive.
MP for Bimbila, Dominic Nutiwul, who is the chief spokesperson for the Nana Addo camp, said a lot has gone on, over the last few days, that show the Alan camp has done a lot in that regard.
