Ghana are through to the semi final stage of the AFCON tournament following a scrappy 2-0 win over debutant Cape Verde.
Substitute Mubarak Wakaso blasted in from the spot minutes after entering the pitch for the first goal and virtually walked the ball from his own half into an empty net for the second, after the Cape Verdian goal keeper and his defence men went in search for a last gasp equalizer.
Even though the Stars won by two goals to nil, it is the Blue Sharks whose impressive performance would linger a while longer after pinning Ghana in their own half for most part of the second half.
Inexperience weighed heavily against the Blue Sharks and Fatau Dauda frustrated them with some breathtaking saves late on in the game.
After a goalless first half it was Wakaso who opened the account of the Stars in a second half with a well taken penalty kick.
Stars striker Asamoah Gyan was heavily shoved off the ball in the 18 yard box with the referee controversially pointing to the spot.
With a cool nerve, Wakaso blasted a pinpoint shot with Vozinha diving in opposite direction for Ghana’s opener.
But it was the Black Stars who were back on defensive duties after the Blue Sharks mounted pressure on them.
Fatau Dauda in a man of the match performance pulled of brilliant saves to keep the Black Stars hope alive.
The Stars gave away too many free-kicks at the edge of the box but the Cape Verdians were unable utilize.
Dauda palmed away a goal bound shot in superb fashion but the Blue Sharks never gave up. They pounded the goal area of the Stars with some sublime build-up but met a resolute Ghana defence as well.
In added time, the Blue Sharks won a corner; all the eleven players moved in for a once-in-a-lifetime equalizer and left their backs exposed.
In a swift switch from defence into attack the Black Stars headed away the corner kick which fell to Wakaso who walked the ball from his own half into the yawning net for Ghana’s second and his personal third goal of the tournament.
The Black Stars will play either Burkina Faso or Togo in the Semi-final stage of the competition.
