The Department of Social Welfare has said it was starting investigations into the backgrounds of child prostitutes who solicit around the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra to put them into a vocation.
The Department’s action followed Joy FM’s exposure of a sprawling and brisk child prostitution business in some brothels near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
Girls, some as young as 12 years and on drugs parade around the brothels and solicit.
There had been heated debates among civil society groups as to the most effective way to deal with the problem.
With regular police raids seemingly a failed ploy, the Social Welfare Department is hoping its package to rescue the young girls, including engaging them in vocational training, in the classroom or sending them back to their parents would help check the incidence.
