The decline in the state of tennis in the country has raised concerns among the sporting public.
This has compelled the head of the technical committee of the Ghana Tennis Association to respond citing several reasons.
The Head of the Technical Committee of the Ghana Tennis Association, David Churcher, spoke to Joy Sports' Dennis Mirpuri expressing his disappointment about the sponsor apathy being shown to the sport locally.
The sport is usually played leisurely by individuals who have the means to sponsor some of these tournaments with their own resources, but this is hardly the case in the country.
Coach Churcher, who served the national team as head coach between 1990 and 2006, seemed frustrated about the loss of the funding from Nestlé Ghana, who had sponsored tennis clinics and tournaments in the country since the late 1970’s.
The coach said Nestlé was disappointed with the Ghana Tennis Association’s inability to organize tennis competitions regularly.
Churcher also hinted that the decline in sponsorship has not only affected the organization of frequent competitions but also development of young players.
He was however remained hopeful that the reconstruction of the tennis courts at the Ohene Djan Stadium will introduce a revival into the sport which is slowly dying.
