The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Sports Council, Mr Sackey Acquaye has observed that lack of a gymnasium has hindered the performance of the country's sports men and women to excel in sporting events.
He therefore called for the construction of gyms to enable athletes, especially those of the indoor and outdoor lesser known sports to develop their talents and compete in both local and international events.
Mr Acquaye said this at the launch of trophies of volleyball, Handball and Basketball Leagues under the various associations in Accra on Wednesday.
Mr Worlanyo Agra, acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council launched trophies for the volleyball, handball and basketball leagues and commended the associations for their foresight and enthusiasm in developing their various sporting events.
Mr Acquaye said that just as the provision of stadiums in some major cities as well as a hockey pitch has contributed to the country's success in soccer and hockey, if the lesser known sports disciplines are also assisted with gyms and equipment they can chalk more successes.
Nii Nortey Dua, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports said the provision of sports equipment and other assistance is a challenge by the Ministry and government and it is for this reason that every effort will be put in place to make the event popularly known and not lesser known in the country.
He advised officials of the lesser known sports to develop strategies and begin with their leagues to develop the capabilities of the players to achieve laurels and to attract peoples' attention and interest.
The Deputy Minister gave the assurance that any active association that develop its programme will receive the needed attention and support from the ministry.
Mr Ken Dzirasah, Chairman of the Greater Accra Handball Association called on the Ministry to review its policies to help develop the other lesser sports.
He said a lot is expected by stakeholders to help develop sports through sponsorship and noted that just as the Black Stars continue to enjoy glory, if the needed support is also given to events like handball, boxing, tennis, volleyball, cycling and basketball the athletes will bring more joy to the people.
