The National Sports Authority (NSA)has ordered the Samir Captan-led administration of the Ghana Boxing Authority to vacate office by Wednesday January 9.
This was indicated in a letter from the Acting CEO of the NSA, Madam Alice Attipoe which clearly stated that the move was to pave way for elections to be held to select executives to run the professional sport.
“As you are well aware, you tenure of office has expired for well over a year now (i.e. June 28 2011). By a copy of this letter therefore the board is dissolved with effect from January 9 2013. This action is strictly to comply with the new LI which was approved by Parliament in July 2011,” second paragraph of the letter stated.
The letter further stated that the revocation of the SMCD 54 of 1976 and the promulgation of the new LI 1988 enjoins all sporting associations including the Boxing Authority to democratically elect their executive boards.
As a result of this action by the NSA, a date will be set within 90 days for an election to select executives to manage professional boxing in Ghana in accordance with the new law. The outgoing administration under Mr Samir Captan’s administration was appointed by the National Sports Authority on July 6, 2009.
It was made up the likes of Jonas Ahene Truly, the Vice President, Ataa Eddie Pappoe, Mr Francis Declan, Dr S.A. Quaye, Mr J.A. Annan, Mr Henry Manly-Spain and Mohammed Amin Lamptey.
Already, some three names have emerged as the most likely succeed Mr Samir Captan, a veteran promoter. Two of these are members of the outgoing board.
They are Mr Henry Manly Spain, who has devoted a lot of his resources into sponsoring boxing promotions and Mr Francis Declan who is on charge of Promotions. Lawyer Peter Zwennes who served as Vice Chairman under Moses Foh-Amoaning’s administration is also a likely candidate.
