Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah on Monday stormed the training camp of International Boxing Organization Bantamweight aspirant Joseph Agbeko ahead of his impending championship bout against Colombian Luis Melendez to wish him well and also assure his teams of governments’ support to enable him defeat his opponent. The minister was at the training camp to monitor the boxer’s preparations ahead of this major boxing extravaganza alongside the Acting Director of the National Sports Authority Madam Attipoe. He was impressed with the boxers’ training regimen and assured all present that government was ready to support him in any way possible to bring glory to the Nation. He again reiterated the point that the days where least financed sports were literally neglected and that the Mahama Administration would make sure that the Ministry of Youth and Sports exercised its responsibilities in a fair and just manner than it existed in the past. The Ministry has been heavily criticized for over concentrating on football to the detriment of the other sporting disciplines and this, the honorable minister says would cease under his administration. “I am here to acquaint myself with Joseph’s preparation ahead of this major international about to know if there is anything we can also do to support him. It has been quite a while since we boasted of two or three world beaters and this opportunity cannot be fluffed. The days of David Kotei Poison and Professor Azumah Nelson should be revived. It is obvious from the little I have seen here that the boxer is leaving nothing to chance and the best we can do from our end as a nation is to support him go past the Colombian boxer and bring honour and pride to this nation.I want to assure him that His Excellency Mr President is keeping tabs of his preparation, he told Joy Sports. Joseph Agbeko was scheduled to take on Colombian opponent Luis Melendez on Saturday March the 8th at the Accra Sports Stadium but the fight has been rescheduled for March 22nd due to what promoters describe as technical challenges.
