The National Road Safety Commission says it will be compelled to introduce stronger regulations for motorists if drivers fail to comply by existing ones. The Chairman of the Commission, Johnson Clifford Aboagye told ASEMPA NEWS that many drivers have obviously refused to abide by safety measures on the roads, leading to the occurrence of fatal accidents.According to him, strengthening the regulations may lead to infringing on the rights of many, but it is the only option now to reduce fatalities.Mr. Aboagye was speaking in connection with Thursday morning’s accident involving a tipper truck and an Intercity STC bus at the Komenda Junction near Cape Coast in which about 15 people died. The Bus which was transporting 48 passengers from Takoradi, was involved in a head-on collision with a tipper truck early in the morning, killing 14 passengers on the spot. Several others who survived are in critical conditions and doctors fear the death toll could rise.Earlier, the Central Regional Minister Nana Ato Arthur had told ASEMPA NEWS that many people who survived the accident could die later due to their serious conditions.Inter-City promises compensationMeanwhile, the Managing Director of Intercity STC, Kwame Adjei Safa has told ASEMPA NEWS that victims of this morning's accident will be compensated.Kwame Adjei Safa said Intercity STC will bear the costs of medical bills of all surviving victims. He further stated that Intercity STC will give families of the dead about GHc1000 (One thousand Ghana cedis) each.Credit: Jerry Mordy (Asempa FM)
