The Supreme Court has refused to hear a case brought against the MP for Bawku Central because plaintiff counsel, Dr. Raymond Atuguba, is among four lawyers 'blacklisted' by judges and magistrates in the country.
The development follows a decision by the Judges and Magistrates Association to get Atuguba and the three other lawyers; David Annan, Abraham Amaliba and Larry Bimi, to prove their assertions that judges and the judiciary are corrupt.
The four lawyers made the comments at a round-table discussion on the Judiciary and Ghana’s justice system in Accra, organized by the National Commission for Civic Education as part of its annual constitution week.
The Judges and Magistrates indicated that until the four lawyers provide proof beyond doubt that Judges and Magistrates are indeed corrupt, they will boycott cases they provide counsel.
Dr. Raymond Atugaba was appearing in court as the prosecution lawyer for Sumaila Bielbiel, a Bawku-based farmer who is contesting the citizenship of Bawku Central MP, Adamu Dramani Sekande.
Sumaila Bielbiel expressed 'strong reservation' on the judge’s stance.
He told Citi News Thursday “I am very disappointed. I was expecting that the judges will call me and ask me whether I need to change a lawyer but they didn’t do that,” he lamented.
The judges, according to Sumaila, said they had adjourned the case Sine Die - "without assigning a day for a further meeting or hearing".
He expressed regret at the turn of events, stating that “if they had a problem, it’s between them and Raymond. I’m not the one who made that comment.”
According to Sumaila, since the court has not dismissed his writ, he will not conclude that he has been denied justice but may change his lawyer, Dr. Raymond Atuguba, if the case drags on and delays due to the current state of affairs.
