The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that a parliamentary by-election for the Tamale Central Constituency will be held on September 30, 2025.
The by-election has been necessitated by the tragic death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.
In a press release issued today, the EC stated that the vacancy triggers the constitutional requirement under Article 112 (5) to elect a new representative.
Prospective candidates are invited to pick up their nomination forms from the Commission's website, www.ec.gov.gh, starting today, August 19, until September 10, 2025.
The submission of completed forms will take place at the EC's Tamale Metropolitan Office from September 8 to September 10, 2025, between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.
The EC has outlined strict guidelines for the nomination process:
- Each candidate's form must be proposed and seconded by two registered voters in the constituency and assented to by eighteen others.
- Candidates must personally deliver their forms or have them delivered by their Proposer or Seconder.
- All forms must be submitted in quadruplicate (four copies).
- Candidates must provide two recent bust-sized photographs against a red background.
The filing fee for the election has been set at GHs10,000.
The Commission is offering a reduced fee of GHs7,500 for all female candidates and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The EC, under the leadership of Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, signed off the release by urging the public to be guided by these announcements as the process begins to find a new MP for the Tamale Central Constituency.
