The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on Ghanaians to actively celebrate the nation’s Heritage Month, March, emphasising the importance of preserving and promoting the country’s rich history, culture, and traditions.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, March 18, the GJA President, Albert Dwumfour, highlighted the month as a vital opportunity for reflection on the values that define Ghanaian identity and strengthen national unity.
“Colleagues, the GJA joins the nation in observing our Heritage Month, a period dedicated to celebrating the rich history, culture, traditions and identity of the Ghanaian people,” Mr Dwumfour said.
He encouraged citizens to proudly wear traditional attire such as kente, fugu, kaba and slit, and caftans, and to enjoy local dishes including tuo zaafi, akple, fufu, kenkey, banku and kokonte. “We want to re-echo the saying: Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, Drink Ghana, Date Ghana and Marry Ghana,” he added.
The GJA also called for the promotion of Ghana’s music and dance traditions, urging media outlets to showcase the country’s cultural heritage on their platforms. “The media remains one of the most powerful vehicles for shaping national identity and consciousness,” Mr Dwumfour noted, commending organisations that have dedicated programming and editorial content to the celebration of Ghanaian culture.
He further urged journalists and media practitioners to use the period to advance patriotic reporting that fosters national unity, responsible citizenship, and the broader national interest.
