For years, the Ashanti Region has been known as the stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).  But in recent times, elections and events show that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has become more attractive to voters in the area.

The 2024 elections marked a turning point, with the NDC recording over 34 per cent of presidential votes. Beyond increasing its share of votes, the party also secured parliamentary seats in areas where it had previously struggled to gain a foothold. This achievement reflects a growing sense of trust and acceptance among voters.

A key factor behind this progress has been the NDC’s focus on connecting with the everyday needs of the people. The party has actively engaged communities, traders, market women, and youth, listening closely to their concerns. Campaign messages have centered on real issues such as the cost of living, business growth and job opportunities, making them relatable to ordinary citizens.

The NDC has also positioned itself as a party ready to deliver practical solutions. Promises to strengthen local trade, support small businesses, and create a stable economic environment have resonated strongly with residents whose livelihoods depend on business and commerce. By presenting clear, people-focused policies, the party has sturdily built a stronger base of support in the region.

Another factor is the growing involvement of young people. Many first-time voters and youth groups are finding a voice within the NDC, drawn by its message of inclusiveness and its efforts to involve them in decision-making. This has energised the party’s grassroots presence and created a renewed sense of momentum within the formerly NPP-saturated region of Ashanti.

With the journey of NDC in the Ashanti Region still unfolding, its progress so far is evidence that it has gained recognition as a viable choice. Through active engagement, relatable policies, and the inclusion of young people, the party is steadily carving out a stronger presence in a region once considered out of reach.
