Several traders at the Dome market in Accra sustained injuries when they clashed with policemen tasked to demolish the market place Tuesday.
One policeman was also injured in the skirmishes and was rushed to the hospital, Joy News can confirm.
The market women sustained the injuries as they scampered to safety from warning shots and volleys of teargas by the police. The traders vowed to resist the exercise, according to Joy News reporter Nana Agyei Essuman.
He said hundreds of market women and youth in the area joined forces by hurling stones at the police in their bid to stop the demolition.
They had succeeded in preventing the exercise a few weeks ago when they mounted roadblocks with the women threatening to embark on a nude demonstration.
But this time around the security forces were in no mood to be threatened or dictated to by the aggrieved market women as the police pulled down structures and wares to clear the area for what officials say is the expansion of the old market.
