The desire to show sympathy to a lady who requested benevolence has resulted in the loss of personal effects of her two benefactors. Gladys Tudoabor, one of the benefactors told the Daily Graphic that about three months ago, she was approached by a lady in her mid-20s with a sad tale to relate. Gladys said the lady, who was cuddling a suckling about 10 months old, gave her name as Xornam Blessing and said she was living in Techiman with her boyfriend to whom she bore the baby. According to Gladys, Xornam told her that at a point in her relationship with the boyfriend, he stopped supporting her and the baby and finally disowned them. Xornam claimed she was going to report the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service when the boy’s mother intervened and decided to care for them, so she relocated to Accra to put up with her. Gladys continued that, according to Xornam, while living with the boy’s mother, the latter insisted that she attend her church, but she declined to do so, explaining that she was studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses and would prefer to worship with them. Xornam claimed that their religious differences came to a head and one day, without any notice, she packed what little stuff she had and bolted. Gladys, an apprentice hairdresser, and her mistress who are themselves Jehovah’s Witnesses, said they allowed Xornam and her baby to sleep in their hairdressing salon for the night. In the meantime, Gladys said, she related Xornam’s plight to her father who accepted to put up with Xornam for about three months. Thereafter Xornam regularly attended the meetings of Jehovah’s Witnesses at Madina. Gladys said on May 18, 2008, she went to the Christian meetings with Xornam, but only a few minutes after arrival, Xornam said she wanted to buy sachet water. Xornam, she said, went out with her baby, leaving behind a small ladies’ bag, which, upon inspection later, was found to contain nothing of any worth. “Unknown to my father and I, Xornam returned to our house at Redco Flats, Madina, packed my clothes and shoes and four Kente cloths belonging to my father and disappeared without a trace’, Gladys added. Xornam is also reported to have defrauded another member of the congregation, Adoley Quaye, who gave her second-hand clothes worth GH¢150 for sale. Xornam is fair-coloured and smallish and about 1.5 metres tall. She easily smiles, is soft-spoken and speaks Ewe, Twi and English fluently and has a smattering of Ga.
