Orbis International Ghana placed advocacy at the heart of this year's World Sight Day commemoration, using the occasion to reinforce the importance of accessible, quality eye care and to mobilise action from the national level to local communities.

The celebrations brought together government institutions, international non-governmental organisations, regional and municipal health authorities, health workers, community leaders, and residents to promote eye health awareness, strengthen partnerships, and improve access to eye care services.

At the national level, the International Non-Governmental Organisations Forum (INGO Forum) in Eye Health, of which Orbis is a member, supported the national World Sight Day commemoration organised by the National Eye Care Unit.

The collective participation of development partners reinforced a shared message that eye health must remain a public health priority and that stronger collaboration is required to reduce avoidable blindness and vision impairment in Ghana.

In the Greater Accra Region, Orbis supported the regional commemoration led by the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service in collaboration with the Ayawaso North Municipal Health Directorate.

The event provided an important platform to engage local government authorities, health professionals, employers, workers, community influencers, the media, and the public on the need to prioritise eye health in homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. Simultaneously, a district-level World Sight Day celebration was held in the Suame Municipality in the Ashanti Region.

Activities conducted across both regions included community and school-based eye health education campaigns, awareness creation, free eye screening and treatment services, and the distribution of spectacles to residents in need.

A major highlight of the Accra commemoration was the handover of ophthalmic equipment to 40 health facilities across the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions. For Orbis, this support represents more than a service delivery intervention; it is a demonstration of the importance of investing in primary eye care and strengthening health systems.

By equipping health facilities with essential eye care tools, the initiative helps bring quality services closer to communities, particularly for individuals who may otherwise face barriers to care due to distance, cost, or limited awareness.

The multi-level celebration reflects Orbis' comprehensive approach to advocacy, combining national-level engagement, strategic partnerships, regional leadership, district action, and community participation to advance eye health for all.

As Ghana marked World Sight Day 2026, Orbis and its partners renewed their call for coordinated action, stronger eye care systems, adequately equipped health facilities, and increased public awareness to prevent avoidable sight loss and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to see a brighter future.
