Waste management company, Zoomlion Limited has donated nine motorbikes to the environment sanitation directorate in the Upper West Region all valued at eighteen thousand Ghana cedis (GHC18000) for their house to house sanitation and supervisory activities.
The Upper West Manager of Zoomlion, Emmanuel Volsuuri who presented the motorbikes to the Upper West regional minister ambassador Amin Amidu Sulemani stated that the donation was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to help the ministry of local government and rural development achieve the national policy on sanitation which was recently launched by president john Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Volsuuri said the purpose of the national policy on sanitation is to use public education as a tool in changing the attitude of the general public towards insanitary practices.
He said in addition to that they have already recruited a workforce of six hundred and fifty (650) in order to make the three months sanitation strategy work.
The Upper West Regional Minister receiving the keys of the motorbikes remarked that the issue of sanitation is of great importance to the government but cannot alone fight it.
He called on all stakeholders especially the media to help educate the people on the need to keep their surroundings clean.
‘‘The forest in Wa is now been officially designated as a toilet [facility] for some people. People go there with ablution cans and with impunity as if the place is their entitlement.
These things must be stopped through education,’’ the regional minister added.
He advised the beneficiary districts and officials to use them judiciously and also for the intended purpose for which they are given.
The Upper West Environmental Health and Sanitation Director Jakpa Mumuni Rex thanked Zoomlion for the donation and pledged that it will be taken care off and used judiciously for the national strategy on sanitation to succeed.
