One hundred and nine (109) police recruits, including 68 females, on Tuesday passed out at the Winneba Police Training School after undergoing eight months training. They were trained in areas such as criminal investigation, professional police ethics, practical police duties and service instruction. Other courses were: criminal law, criminal procedure, law of evidence and acts and decrees, which encompasses domestic violence, child trafficking, children’s right and road traffic regulations. Addressing the recruits, the Director-General, Human Resource Development of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mrs Joana Osei-Poku, urged them to remain patriotic, duty conscious, disciplined and loyal at all times. She told them that the first eighteen months of their field work would constitute their probation period where they would be required to perform creditably. “As you climb the professional ladder, you must learn from your seniors in ranks, who have been discharging their duties professionally without blemish,” she said. She also asked them to refrain from the use of inappropriate and illegal police powers to coerce, harass, intimidate and assault members of the community. She urged them to remain resolute and never lose their temper but persevere, even in the face of scorn or ridicule and added that they must be fair and firm and eschew negative tendencies. DCOP Mrs Osei-Poku appealed to members of the public to always furnish the police with the necessary information about criminals and their hide out as part of measures to prevent and control crime. The Commander of the Winneba Police Training School, ASP Samuel Okanta commended the recruits for the high sense of discipline they exhibited during the training. Police Woman Recruit Linda Quagrain was adjudged the overall best recruit and was awarded with a baton. The Central Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Aconite Kampala and Neenyi Ghartey VII, Omanhene of Effutu were present at the function. Source: GNA
