Eleven aspiring candidates have been disqualified from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary primaries, scheduled for January 27.
The disqualified candidates are from constituencies where the party currently has sitting Members of Parliament (MP).
This was contained in the summary of the party’s vetting last week.
According to JoyNews’ Samuel Mbura, the party did not disclose the specific reasons for disqualifying the 11 candidates.
The NPP, therefore, insisted that the vetting process was conducted according to the party’s constitution.
Speaking to the media, the Director of Elections for the NPP, Evans Nimako emphasised the party's commitment to a fair and transparent vetting process.
He stated, "If you look at the party's constitution, it has been done in a very free, fair and transparent manner. But, as I said, we are human and that's why the party has provided the opportunity for individuals who may feel aggrieved by some development to appeal through the National Parliaments Appeals Committee.”
About 400 persons obtained forms to participate in the NPP Parliamentary race, with 373 undergoing the vetting process.
Following the vetting process, 11 individuals were disqualified, 326 qualified, and two cases were referred to the National Executive Committee for further action.
Additionally, two aspirants voluntarily withdrew from the race, 29 individuals went unopposed, and one aspirant's application was incomplete in filling out the forms.
Two aspirants also did not make any appearance before the vetting committee.
