Twelve new records were made at the end of the three-week 2011 Ashanti regional Senior High Schools (SHS) and colleges inter-zonal athletics meeting held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The three-week competition, which was keenly contested had Kassim Malik of Technology SHS making a record of 10.33secs in the boys 100 metres with another by Alfedd Akakpo of Ejisuman in the 110 hurdles with the time of 14.17secs. Martin Atsey of Kumasi T. I. Ahmadiyya (Amass), also made a record in the triple jump with a leap of 15.14 metres, He again made a record in the long jump with another leap of 7.23 metres while Atsu Nyamadi also of Kumasi AMASS coming up with a record in the discus with a throw of 45.00 metres. The Amass relay team in the boys also made a record of 41.91secs in the 4x100 metre race. Matthew Nantzere of Ghanamy had a record time of 3mins.57.80secs in the 1,500 metres race. Records set in the girls Division came from Elizabeth Dadzie of Kumasi Amass who made two records in the long jump and triple jumps with a leap of 5.57 metres in the long jump and 11.48 metres in the triple jump respectively. Dina Tetteh also of the same school made a record in the 100 metre hurdles with a record time of 14.24secs. Lydia Nuamah also of Ghanamy with a leap of 1.58 metres also made a record in the high jump, with her school girls’ team making a new record of 4mins.01.72secs in the 4x400secs. Twenty-six schools qualified at the end of meeting to participate in a two-day super-zonal level slated for 24 and 25 February of this month at the same venue. Some of the schools that would be competing in both track and field events include Opoku Ware, Prempeh College, Amass, Technology, Ghanamy, Dadiese, Kumasi Academy, Effisco, Yaa Asantewaa, Konongo Odumase, Osei Kyeretwie, Saint Monica’s, Nsutaman, Aduman, Obuasi, and Anglican. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at the end of the competition, Mr Samuel Achampong, Ashanti Regional Organizing Secretary of the Schools and Colleges Sports Federation, the organizers of the meeting commended the athletes and the officials for the good work done.
