Mamobi won their second title of the competition after defeating Darkuman to lift the 2023 edition of the annual Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup in Accra.
The 104-year-old National Chief Imam, whom the tournament is named after and is played in his honour, showed up for the grand finale himself on Sunday night alongside dignitaries, including the Minister of Sports, Mustapha Ussif.
Both Mamobi and Darkoman were not highly fancied to win the trophy, but after their surprise run to the finals, they both showed real hunger for the ultimate, in a thrilling climax, which was watched by a packed house at the Sharubutu Complex at New Fadama.
Mamobi's victory was even more interesting, considering that they were earlier disqualified on day one of the tournament for reporting late for their 1st Round fixture, but after an appeal, organisers of the tournament readmitted them.
They seized the golden opportunity by launching a remarkable run to the finals which saw them register impressive wins against Salaga from the Savannah Region, Accra New Town, Akim Oda Zongo and Madina en route to the finals.
Darkuman, who have never won the competition before, stunned many after defeating dark horses Hohoe Zongo in the semi-finals.
Hohoe Zongo had caused a major upset in the quarter-finals after defeating Fadama and silencing the vociferous home fans. Hohoe were highly favoured to win the tournament after their stunning quarter-final win against the hosts, but neighbouring Darkuman avenged the painful defeat for Fadama.
About 30 Zongo communities participated in the tournament, which is named after the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhi Sharubutu and is played in his honour to bring Zongos together at celebrate the successful end of Ramadan.
The National Chief Imam, together with the Sports Minister and other distinguished guests, presented medals and trophies to the winners and runners-up.
Mamobi now joins Ashaiman and Kasoa as the only communities to win the tournament twice.
The 8th edition of the tournament was supported by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Ministry of Sports, NASCO Electronics, Zongo Development Fund and Perla Natural Mineral Water.
