Three persons have died following a shoot-out between two chieftaincy factions in Ablekuma, a suburb of Accra.
According to the Police, the violence broke out Saturday between two factions owing allegiance to two disputed chiefs of the area during the popular Homowo ritual of sprinkling of Kpokpoi, the traditional Ga food for the festival.
The Accra Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service, Freeman Tettey told Joynews that the clash occurred when a faction belonging to Nii Kwaku Fosu, a self-styled chief having gone round to sprinkle their Kpokpoi opened fire on the second chief Nii Larbi Mensah’s entourage as they went round sprinkling their Kpokpoi.
The Nii Larbi Mensah’s faction also returned fire and this led to two causalities and four persons sustaining injuries. But the death toll rose to three Sunday morning when one person receiving treatment at the Police Hospital died from his gunshot wounds.
According to the Police, Saturday’s violent clash from the protracted chieftaincy dispute has led to a massive police presence in the area.
DSP Freeman Tettey cautioned the feuding factions to use the appropriate channels to address their grievances rather than resorting to the use of violence.
According to him, outdoor event organizers must be mindful of the existence of the Public Order Act that mandates them to seek police assistance when organizing outdoor events.
DSP Tettey stated the police will deal ruthlessly with people who are not ready to obey the law.
