At least four people are in the custody of the police in the Denkyira-Obuasi District in the Central Region, over the murder of a military officer Monday morning.

The men were arrested after an initial investigation revealed they played a role in the murder of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama of the 5th Battalion Infantry.

An Assembly Member alleged to have organized the mob attack which led to the death of the soldier is on the run, police have said.

The country has been thrown into shock following news about the lynching of Captain Adam Mahama on Monday by Denkyira-Obuasi residents in the Upper Denkyira West District.

He was posted to the area about three weeks ago to relieve the substantive Commander of the military personnel there.

Captain Adam Mahama met his untimely death when he was out for his early morning jogging, it has been reported.

He was lynched by some youth after he was mistaken for an armed robber because of a weapon he carried on him. He was pelted with stones and burnt, the military has said.

The military hierarchy visited the scene to gather some evidence to aid its investigation of the matter, Nhyira FM's Ohemeng Tawiah reported.

Some residents who could not flee the town after the incident have been held hostage by some military personnel who have gone to retrieve the deceased's gun.

"They have been grouped into two - the women and children are in a local church building and the second group the men have been made to sit on the ground," the reporter said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo in a statement has vowed to ensure all perpetrators of the heinous act are brought to face the law.

Spokesperson for the Central Regional Police, ASP Irene Oppong told Dzifa Bampoh on Joy FM's Top Story Tuesday the police will be interrogating the suspects to gather information.

She said a charge sheet would be prepared after the police are done with their investigation. "We will then look for the others who are on the run."
